Mary Kenneth Keller Computer Science & Engineering Undergraduate Teaching Award

For outstanding contributions to undergraduate education through teaching and service

Mary Kenneth Keller, B.V.M., was a Roman Catholic religious sister and educator. In 1965, Keller was the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in Computer Science in the United States. She founded and then chaired the Computer Science department of Clarke College for almost 20 years. She played an active role in computer science education when it was still in its formative years in the United States and was an advocate for women in computer science.

A certificate and US$2,000 honorarium are awarded for outstanding contributions to undergraduate education through teaching and service, and for helping to maintain interest in the field and make a statement about the importance with which the IEEE Computer Society views undergraduate education.

  • 2019 Robert R. Kessler: For outstanding contributions to interdisciplinary computing education through the creation of an innovative program in Entertainment Arts and Engineering and a fruitful undergraduate teaching activity.
  • 2018 Travis Doom: For tremendous contributions to Computer Science and Engineering through a balanced career incorporating research, mentoring of students, curriculum and pedagogy development, and service.
  • 2017 Sven Koenig: For his commitment to engaging students through project-based learning and mentoring that cultivates a passion for artificial intelligence.
  • 2016 Mark Sherriff: For outstanding contributions to undergraduate computer science education through innovative teaching and commitment to increasing enrollment and diversity in computer science programs.
  • 2015 Henry C.B. Chan: For outstanding contributions to computing education through teaching, mentoring students and service to the education community.
  • 2014 Elizabeth Gerber: For her paradigm shifting extracurricular design initiative that fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and learning.
  • 2013 Robert J. Fornaro: For outstanding teaching and mentoring of undergraduate students in award-winning engineering projects.
  • 2012 Mark Guzdial: For outstanding and sustained excellence in computing education through innovative teaching, mentoring, inventive course development, and knowledge dissemination.
